The main discipline of SMEE---Mechanical Engineering was approved as one of the first PhD authorities in 1998. Mechanical Engineering ranked No.2 in 2002 and No. 4 in 2006 respectively at the academic assessment of the Ministry of Education, and was approved as the national key discipline in 2007. Mechanical Engineering is the key discipline during the national Project 211 and 'Project 985. It currently possesses 1 national key lab (the National Key Lab of Advanced Robotics and Systems), 1 Engineering and Technology Center of COSTIND (Ultra-precision Machining Research and Application Center for National Defense Science & Technology Industry), 5 provincial (ministerial) key labs, 1 Key Discipline Laboratory of National Defense, 2provincial (ministerial) Engineering and Technology Center and 1National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center (National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Mechanical Engineering).
