Department of Mechanical Design

Department of mechanical design originated from the teaching group of mechanisms theory and machine design, which was founded in 1952.It is one of the earliest-established mechanical departments in China, and it served as the teaching foundation during then to learn from the Soviet Union in the mechanical field. After the development for more than half a century, the department has built a top-notch research and teaching team, making great progress in various aspects ranging from teaching and research to technology. The department was approved to set up the doctoral degree program of mechanics in 1984.Two courses, mechanical theory and mechanical design, were rated as Excellent Courses in HIT in 1991, and passed the evaluation again in 2000. Besides, the two groups were voted as Excellent Teaching Group in Heilongjiang Province, and also rated as the Advanced Labs. The awards laid a solid foundation for the development of the department. In 1998 the teaching groups of mechanisms and machine design combined together and formed a new teaching group, named Teaching Group of mechanical design. The experimental center of mechanics was then established by the teaching groups, which obtained final support from the World Bank. The experimental center of mechanics passed the “Shuangji” evaluation proposed by the Education Department of Heilongjiang Province. The teaching group of mechanical design was promoted as a department in October 2002, named Department of Mechanical Design. The new department still teaches fundamental courses of mechanical engineering.

Since 1997 the department has published 18 paper textbooks and 4 electronic textbook in 4 publishing houses. From 1997 to 2003, the department undertook more than 20 teaching programs, including programs of national level. Department of Construction Machinery and Logistics Technology

The history of the Department of Construction Machinery and Logistics Technology can date back to the early year of P. R. China. In 1954, with the help of experts coming from the Soviet Union, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) became the first University in China which has the construction machinery major which was initially named the Architecture and Road Construction major. Then it developed independently after the Department of Civil Engineering of HIT became Harbin University of Civil Engineering and Architecture. After the reform and open-up policy, the Department of the Construction Machinery and Electronics was founded. It had three major which are Mechanical Design, Mechanical Electronic and Industrial Automation. In the following years, it has several names such as Architecture Machinery, Construction Machinery, Crane and Transportation Machinery and Mechanical Design-Manufacture and Its Automation. In the year of 1981, it was firstly authorized to give the Master Degree of Mechanical Design. In 1992, it became the key disciplines by the Ministry of Construction. In 2000, which is the year when Harbin University of Civil Engineering and Architecture merged into HIT, it went back to School of Mechatronic Engineering, HIT and was given an official name, Department of Construction Machinery and Logistics Technology. The first-rate discipline it belongs to is the national key discipline. Now there is a young and vigorous group in the department, which has three professors and doctoral advisor, seven assistant professors and 90 percent of them have doctor degree.

The founder of the discipline, Prof. Dimin Gu which is the graduate student supervised by the expert from the Soviet Union, is the famous domestic specialist in construction crane and transportation machinery and has outstanding accomplishment in the area of crane structure analysis. He is the editor in chief of the first domestic textbook on crane, and presides over the structure design part of national crane design specification and tower crane design specification. Based on this, the second prize of the national science and technology progress was awarded to the group. Besides, the other specialists in the group, such as Rongbo Chen, Qibao Pi, Hesheng Lin, Jingwu Sun, and Shaohua Liu, have devoted their life to the research of construction machinery. The great achievement they proposed has great effect on the development of the industry.

The mainly advantage research area of the Department of Construction Machinery and Logistics Technology is the structural analysis of construction machinery, dynamic analysis of mechanism, stability analysis of machinery structure and nonlinear analysis theory. The department is standing at the top level in theoretical analysis and engineering application. The first domestic textbook on crane was edited by the department. The group also presides over the structure design part of national crane design specification (GB3811) and tower crane design specification (GB/T13752). The experts in the group were chosen by the government, ministry and the province as consultants to perform the authenticating of the serious accidents of crane, editing and revising the technical specifications. Successively host national Eighth. Five, Ninth Five, Eleventh Five and Twelfth Five national key research and science and technology support projects, the major national construction projects and the provincial scientific research projects more than 20 times. The research results are up to international or domestic advanced level. The group won the national second prize of scientific and technological progress, the provincial scientific research and teaching achievement prizes at the more than ten items.

During the recent three years, the group hosts the national science foundation, national “Eleventh Five” key technical support project, major national projects and provincial projects more than ten times and more than twenty projects from the industry.
